Five Belgian Banks Join Wero Payment Network
Five Belgian banks – Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and vdk bank – have joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI), supporting the rollout of Wero, the EU's digital wallet and instant account-to-account payment solution.
The European Payments Initiative (EPI) is expanding its reach in Belgium with five local banks – Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and vdk bank – joining the consortium. These banks will support the ongoing deployment and integration of Wero, the EU's digital wallet and instant account-to-account (A2A) payment solution.
Bancontact Payconiq Company will serve as Wero's distribution partner in Belgium, enabling merchants to adopt Wero payments with minimal changes to their existing infrastructure. This move is part of EPI's broader objective to establish a European payment platform, reducing reliance on non-European payment providers and enhancing the continent's financial sovereignty.
Wero currently serves over 40 million users across France, Germany, and Belgium. The platform is scheduled to introduce e-commerce payments by late 2025, followed by in-store payments, subscription management, and loyalty program integration by 2026. Future functionalities aim to encompass a wide range of transactions, from peer-to-peer transfers to installment payments and rental deposits.
Fintech firm Revolut has also integrated Wero, further solidifying its position as a significant European payment solution. EPI was established in the early 2020s by European financial institutions seeking to create an independent payment infrastructure.
