Photography services company Flaşçı has released a guide detailing the relationship between light intensity and distance, a fundamental concept in controlling photographic lighting. The guide emphasizes that a clear understanding of the physics behind this phenomenon, known as the inverse square law, is crucial for achieving desired image outcomes.

The core principle explained is that light intensity diminishes exponentially with distance. Specifically, doubling the distance from a light source reduces its intensity to one-quarter, and tripling the distance reduces it to one-ninth. This phenomenon significantly impacts how lighting setups function in practice.

Flaşçı uses practical examples to illustrate the consequences of this law. Moving a flash from one meter to two meters away from a subject results in a loss of approximately two stops of light, necessitating adjustments to exposure settings like aperture, ISO, or flash power.

The guide also addresses how distance affects the quality of light, specifically its softness or hardness. A closer light source appears larger relative to the subject, producing softer shadows. As the distance increases, the source appears smaller, leading to harsher shadows with sharper edges. Furthermore, the rapid fall-off of light with distance can be leveraged to separate a subject from its background by keeping the background darker.

Flaşçı suggests that moving a light source closer is often more effective for softening light than simply increasing its power. For achieving soft light, proximity is key. Conversely, to illuminate a background evenly or achieve consistent lighting across a wider scene, the light source should be placed further away and its power increased to compensate for the greater distance.
