Flex engineer Varsha Parthasarathy details startup transition
Varsha Parthasarathy, former Lyft engineer, shares her experience as the first technical hire at fintech startup Flex.

Varsha Parthasarathy joined Flex as its first engineer after a career in autonomous vehicle technology at Lyft. The startup, which graduated from Y Combinator’s S23 batch, provides a payment infrastructure that allows merchants to accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) payments directly at checkout.
Parthasarathy’s role at the early-stage company differs significantly from her previous tenure at a large corporation. Her daily responsibilities span software development, technical support, sales onboarding, and merchant compliance. To manage the high volume of support requests, she developed the "Flex Investigator," a Slack-integrated tool that reduces transaction tracing time from twenty minutes to fifteen seconds.
Reflecting on the startup transition, Parthasarathy noted that the lack of defined operational boundaries allowed her to address inefficiencies directly. She emphasized that the decision to join was based on an evaluation of the co-founders' decision-making processes during a trial work week.
Flex continues to focus on bridging the gap between healthcare payments and consumer retail. Parthasarathy noted that the company’s internal culture prioritizes rapid problem-solving and technical autonomy, allowing engineers to build internal tooling without extensive approval processes.
