Flexcompute debuts physics-based simulation tool for space thruster plume analysis

Flexcompute has introduced a Physics Twin tool designed to simulate the impact of thruster plumes on spacecraft during close-range maneuvers. The software aims to address the challenges of docking and refueling, where engine exhaust can disrupt the flight path or damage the equipment of nearby vehicles.

The tool utilizes a combination of neural networks and a Boltzmann solver, which the company states provides accuracy comparable to the traditional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method while requiring significantly less compute power. Unlike standard surrogate models, this system is grounded in physics, allowing it to remain accurate across varying geometries without requiring retraining.

Dr. Han Park, Vice President of AI Integration at Northrop Grumman, noted that the approach could speed up analysis by approximately 200 times. This capability allows mission teams to evaluate a broader array of approach paths and firing sequences, enhancing the safety and reliability of complex space operations.

Flexcompute co-founder Vera Yang stated that the tool is part of a broader suite of physics-based models intended to guide engineering decisions before hardware is built. The software is currently available for integration into mission planning systems.
