Flipkart Adds Micro-Drama Section to Shopping App

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has officially integrated a new Micro-Drama section into its main application, offering short-form scripted entertainment directly on its shopping platform.

The section, located under the 'Play' tab, features multiple micro-drama titles. Flipkart is collaborating with Terribly Tiny Tales (TTT) and Pratilipi to produce content for the platform. Content from Double Tap Films, Pratilipi's micro-drama studio, is also available.

Micro-dramas have rapidly emerged as a significant short-form entertainment category in India. The market has seen substantial growth, with specialized platforms and major players like ZEE5, Amazon Prime Video, and JioHotstar launching their own offerings. According to a Lumikai report, the Indian micro-drama market exceeded $300 million in its first year and is projected to reach $4.5 billion by 2030.

Flipkart's strategy appears to leverage the app's existing user base and recommendation systems. Short episodes may provide users with an additional reason to spend time in the app between shopping sessions. Furthermore, the content could open new avenues for advertising, brand integrations, and product placements, seamlessly blending entertainment with commerce.

Past ventures into digital content by the company, including the 2011 acquisition of Mime360 for music and digital distribution, and the later Flyte music service, did not achieve sustained success. The new micro-drama section marks Flipkart's latest attempt to embed content more deeply into the shopping experience.
