Flipkart expands into quick commerce and food delivery
Walmart-backed e-commerce firm Flipkart is aggressively investing in quick commerce and piloting food delivery services in India. The company aims to capture significant market share in these rapidly growing sectors.

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart, majority-owned by Walmart, is deepening its engagement in the quick commerce and food delivery sectors. The company has launched aggressive strategies, including significant discounts on its Flipkart Minutes service, aiming to become one of the top two quick commerce players in India by the end of this year.
The expansion comes at a substantial cost, with reports indicating monthly expenses of approximately US$31 million for the quick commerce business. Concurrently, Flipkart has initiated a pilot for food delivery services in Bengaluru. By leveraging its existing customer base and potentially lower commission rates, Flipkart seeks to challenge dominant players like Swiggy and Zomato in a competitive market.
These strategic moves place Flipkart in direct competition with established players in fast-paced delivery segments. Flipkart, previously recognized for innovations such as cash-on-delivery and flexible returns that expanded online shopping in India, now faces rivals like Meesho and quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart.
Meanwhile, Flipkart has indefinitely postponed its plans for an initial public offering due to market uncertainty. Despite the aggressive push into new service areas, the company's broader listing intentions are currently on hold.
