Flipkart Plans Entry into Microdrama Amid Diversification Efforts

Flipkart, the Indian e-commerce major owned by Walmart, is reportedly planning an entry into the entertainment business with the production of short-form scripted shows, referred to as microdramas. Sources indicate that the company is in discussions with startups such as Terribly Tiny Tales and Pratilipi to create exclusive content for its platform.

The move is part of Flipkart's broader strategy to diversify its offerings beyond its core e-commerce operations and build a more comprehensive consumer ecosystem for its over 500 million registered users. Content is also expected to be sourced from Pinkvilla, Flipkart's digital media arm, which was acquired previously, and which recently appointed Vivek Mohan Sharma as its CEO.

Rather than launching a standalone service, Flipkart intends to integrate the microdrama offering directly into its main application. The company is testing a dedicated feed within the app, featuring personalized recommendations. This initiative aims to increase user engagement within the app and potentially link content consumption directly with commerce.

The strategy appears to be a direct response to the rapid growth of India's microdrama market, projected to reach ₹650 crore by 2028. Competitors in this space include Kuku TV and JioHotstar. This expansion into entertainment is one facet of Flipkart's diversification.

Flipkart has already ventured into quick commerce with Flipkart Minutes and is exploring other consumer-facing services, including food delivery and ticketing for films and live events. The company has also experienced several senior-level departures recently, suggesting an ongoing organizational restructuring alongside these new business ventures.
