Flix and Daimler Buses to Develop Electric Long-Distance Buses
Flix and Daimler Buses are collaborating to develop fully electric powertrains for long-distance buses over the next four years. The German federal government is providing funding for the project.
Flix, operator of the world's largest long-distance bus network, is partnering with Daimler Buses on a project to develop fully electric powertrains for long-distance coaches within the next four years. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action has secured funding for the initiative.
The project involves testing two fully electric prototype buses under real-world conditions. Flix will continuously evaluate performance data to ensure the scalability of the technology for its entire fleet. The aim is to develop cost-effective production and assembly processes for electric-powered buses.
An industry-wide alliance has been formed for the development effort, comprising Daimler Buses and prominent German technical research institutions such as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the University of Mannheim, and the Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau. Together, the partners aim to overcome current technical challenges related to efficiency and operational flexibility for long-distance electric buses, including charging infrastructure and passenger/luggage capacity.
Flix founder and CEO André Schwämmlein stated the company's belief in the future of carbon-neutral bus travel and its ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact through alternative powertrains. He described the collaboration with Daimler Buses and research institutions as a significant step toward decarbonizing transportation.
The initial phase will focus on developing a modular powertrain with emphasis on energy consumption, range, and battery longevity. The ultimate goal is to create environmentally friendly, technology-driven, yet affordable, travel solutions.
