FlixTrain orders 65 new high-speed trains
FlixTrain, part of travel tech company Flix SE, has ordered 65 new European high-speed trains from Spanish manufacturer Talgo, with locomotives supplied by Siemens. The contract is valued at up to EUR 2.4 billion and is set to accelerate the company's expansion in Germany and Europe.
FlixTrain, a subsidiary of the global travel tech company Flix SE, announced an order for 65 new European high-speed trains. The trains will be manufactured by Spanish firm Talgo, with locomotives provided by Siemens. The total contract value is up to EUR 2.4 billion, including certain maintenance services.
This strategic move is a response to growing demand for fast and affordable rail travel. FlixTrain aims to leverage the significant market potential it sees for its services in Germany and across Europe. The German high-speed rail market is projected to grow by 45% by 2030, while the broader European market was valued at approximately EUR 27 billion in 2023.
"We are pursuing a long-term strategy with FlixTrain and will significantly expand our services in the coming years," said André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix. "With the tremendous expansion of our train fleet, we will start a new era of train travel in Germany and Europe." The company's objective is to attract more passengers to sustainable train travel and to grow the overall market.
The new trains will operate at speeds of up to 230 km/h and are designed with features such as barrier-free boarding, passenger information systems, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Built on the Talgo 230 platform, the trains are intended to facilitate pan-European growth due to their universal design, capable of operating across multiple European countries.
