FlixTrain to Launch Services to Munich with New High-Speed Trains in 2028
FlixTrain is expanding its network with investments in new high-speed trains, commencing service to Munich in 2028. The locomotives will be produced locally in Germany.
Flix announced it will expand its train services, introducing connections to Munich starting in 2028. The company is investing in a fleet of new high-speed trains designed to enhance passenger comfort with features such as accessible entrances and advanced Wi-Fi.
The locomotives for these new trains will be manufactured by Siemens Mobility at their Allach facility in Munich, reinforcing the company's commitment to local production within Bavaria. Flix has placed an order for 65 high-speed trains, with a total contract value of EUR 2.4 billion.
André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix, highlighted the significance of the announcement. "With FlixTrain in Munich, the circle closes for us – we are returning to where we started in 2013," Schwämmlein stated. He added that Bavaria represents a substantial market for sustainable travel and that these new trains will usher in a new era for rail journeys.
Bavaria's Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter, welcomed the development. "FlixTrain's decision to service Munich and utilize locally manufactured Siemens locomotives is a dual commitment to Bavaria as a location," the minister commented. He emphasized that increased competition on the rail network benefits passengers and that investments in modern trains strengthen both the transport sector and the industrial base.
The new trains, based on the Talgo-230 model, will achieve speeds of up to 230 km/h. Flix has collaborated with Talgo to optimize the trains for operational efficiency. Flix aims to provide sustainable and affordable travel in over 40 countries across five continents.
