Flock Safety Faces Growing Backlash and Creative Protests

Flock Safety, a surveillance technology company, is experiencing significant public backlash across the United States as citizens and local governments express growing concerns about its extensive network of automated license plate readers. These cameras, intended by law enforcement as a crime-fighting tool, have become a focal point for anxieties surrounding mass surveillance and data privacy.
The pushback has led to concrete consequences for the company, with over 50 agencies or jurisdictions reportedly canceling, suspending, or rejecting Flock contracts, or deactivating cameras since the start of 2026. Concerns cited include potential misuse of data for immigration enforcement or unauthorized tracking.
In addition to official contract disputes, Flock cameras have become targets of widespread vandalism. Reports indicate incidents in at least 36 states where cameras have been stolen, damaged, or obscured. This physical resistance reflects a deeper public unease with the expanding surveillance infrastructure.
Responding to the mounting pressure, Flock Safety announced new operational guardrails in mid-August. CEO Garrett Langley has publicly called for a national compromise between privacy and safety concerns. Meanwhile, creative protests have emerged, including artists creating anti-Flock imagery and activists staging demonstrations outside properties associated with the technology, highlighting a determined citizen effort to challenge the proliferation of surveillance.
