Florida International University Launches Cruise Center With Industry Leaders

Florida International University (FIU) has announced the establishment of the FIU Cruise Excellence Center, an initiative designed to address key challenges and opportunities within the global cruise sector. Operating under FIU's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the center aims to position the university as a leading academic hub for cruise industry research, talent development, and innovation.

The launch coincided with the inaugural meeting of the Center's Cruise Executive Advisory Board, a founding group comprising presidents, CEOs, and senior executives from major cruise lines and related sectors, including travel distribution, destinations, and maritime services. This board will guide FIU in identifying industry priorities and translating academic knowledge into practical applications.

"The launch of the FIU Cruise Excellence Center signifies a historic partnership right here in Miami, the Cruise Capital of the World," said Jeanette M. Nuñez, president of FIU. "The Center creates a strong nexus between FIU's expertise and industry leadership to help develop talent, generate meaningful research, and contribute to the future of cruising."

Key strategic priorities for the center include merging academic research, education, and industry collaboration, with a strong focus on creating career opportunities for FIU students. Through degree programs and specialized credentials, the center intends to prepare students for impactful careers and cultivate the next generation of industry leaders.

Larry Pimentel, FIU Distinguished Cruise Executive-in-Residence and chair of the advisory board, emphasized the practical nature of the partnership. He stated that the center's goal is to serve as a relevant, independent, and useful resource for the global cruise industry, bridging industry experience with academic insight.
