Foldable smartphone market expected to consolidate into two primary form factors by 2028

Industry analysts suggest the foldable smartphone market will bifurcate into square and wide-aspect designs, with major manufacturers adjusting hardware strategies accordingly.

31 October 2026

Market analysis indicates that by 2027-2028, the foldable smartphone sector will stabilize into two dominant form factors: a 1:1 square ratio for productivity-focused devices and a 4:3 wide-aspect ratio optimized for media consumption. The square design allows for improved thermal management and battery capacity, whereas the 4:3 design aims to provide a more immersive experience for gaming and video.

Key manufacturers including Huawei, Xiaomi, and Apple are expected to maintain development across these categories. Oppo and Honor are reportedly planning new entries in the wide-format segment, while Vivo's roadmap remains under evaluation.

While global foldable shipment growth is projected to remain modest through 2026, the competitive landscape faces significant shifts. Research firm TrendForce estimates that Apple’s entry into the foldable segment could capture nearly 25% of the market in its first year, compelling existing brands to adapt their product strategies to secure remaining market share.
