Fondation Louis Vuitton Presents Alexander Calder Exhibition

The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris opened its exhibition "Calder. Rêver en équilibre" on April 15. The show commemorates the American artist Alexander Calder (1898–1976), renowned for his kinetic mobiles and stable sculptures.

The exhibition marks two significant anniversaries: the 100th year since Calder first came to France and the 50th year since his death. "Calder. Rêver en équilibre" features approximately 300 works, spanning the artist's career from his early "circus performances" with miniature sculptures to his monumental works, paintings, drawings, and jewelry.

The exhibition presents pieces from various periods of Calder's artistic practice. Developed in collaboration with the Calder Foundation, the exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive overview of his diverse output. The display of mobiles, which transform space through kinetic choreography, covers half a century of creation.

Calder's works are displayed alongside those of his contemporaries, including artists such as Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Piet Mondrian, and Pablo Picasso. This juxtaposition highlights Calder's position as a radical innovator within the avant-garde movement, who expanded the dimensions of sculpture to include time as an essential fourth dimension, according to guest curators Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer.

The exhibition is open to the public until August 16, offering visitors a chance to explore the visual world of one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th century.
