Food Safety Group Sues U.S. Over 'Forever Chemical' Pesticide Approval

The Center for Food Safety (CFS), along with the Center for Biological Diversity and the Pesticide Action & Agroecology Network North America, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the approval of the pesticide trifludimoxazin. The groups allege that the substance contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court, contends that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) failed to conduct adequate safety assessments before permitting the use of trifludimoxazin. This pesticide is reportedly used in the cultivation of widely consumed items such as fruits, nuts, and grains.

According to CFS and its co-plaintiffs, PFAS chemicals have been linked to a range of health issues, including cancer, thyroid dysfunction, and compromised immune systems. The organizations are seeking the cancellation of trifludimoxazin's registration and a more thorough review of its potential risks.

This action highlights ongoing concerns about the environmental and public health impacts of PFAS chemicals. Regulatory bodies and industries are facing increasing pressure to restrict the use of these compounds and identify safer alternatives.
