Ford and Geely reportedly agree on EV production at Spanish plant
Ford and China's Geely have reportedly reached an agreement for Geely to produce electric vehicles at Ford's Almussafes plant in Spain. The deal is expected to secure the factory's future.
Automakers Ford and China's Geely have reportedly reached an agreement for Geely to produce electric vehicles at Ford's Almussafes plant near Valencia, Spain. The deal is expected to be announced during a July 23 visit to the factory by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ford Europe President Jim Baumbick, according to Reuters, citing Spanish newspaper ABC.
The arrangement would provide Geely with a manufacturing base inside the European Union, granting it direct access to the European market and potentially helping it avoid tariffs on EVs imported from China. ABC reported that Geely could produce its EX2 electric vehicle model at the plant.
For Ford, sharing the facility could reduce fixed costs and help preserve jobs and production at Almussafes. The plant's future had been uncertain due to the phaseout of several models and its reliance on the Kuga SUV.
