Ford names new electric truck Fathom

Ford has named its upcoming affordable four-door electric pickup truck the Fathom. This vehicle is part of the company's second major push into the electric vehicle market, built upon a newly developed UEV platform.

The Fathom emerges after Ford's initial attempt to electrify its best-selling F-150 pickup did not meet expectations. A dedicated internal team, based in California, was tasked with creating a universal EV platform from scratch, incorporating advancements from EV startups and clean-sheet designs.

The truck will feature a new zonal architecture for its electronics. This system significantly reduces the amount of wiring by replacing numerous discrete electronic control units found in most vehicles with a few powerful computers that manage multiple functions.

Starting at an anticipated $28,350, the Fathom represents Ford's strategy to expand its electric offerings and appeal to a broader customer base seeking more accessible EV options.
