Ford Stock Reverses Gains Amid Fading AI Hype

Ford Motor Company's stock has shed its entire 45% gain from earlier this year. Investor expectations for lucrative AI-driven partnerships have not materialized, while economic pressures mount for the automaker.

Ford Motor Company's stock has given back all of its gains from earlier this year, erasing a 45% rally that had been fueled by investor optimism about its battery storage business striking profitable partnerships within the artificial intelligence sector.

Market analysts have begun to temper these expectations. "The AI dividend won't return unless Ford's battery storage business truly starts to generate revenue, and that's likely not until 2027 or 2028," said Joe Gilbert, a fund manager at Integrity Asset Management. Gilbert, who did not buy Ford stock during the rally, sees the subsequent decline as validation of his previously bearish outlook.

The reversal follows a broader downturn in the automotive sector, exacerbated by rising fuel prices, shaky consumer confidence, increasing interest rates, and intensifying competition. Ford's stock has fallen 8.1% year-to-date, while competitor General Motors is down 5.3%. In contrast, the S&P 500 index has risen 12% over the same period.

Adding to the challenges, Ford is also facing production hurdles. CEO Jim Farley indicated that F-150 pickup production in the third quarter was impacted by supplier issues. The company is scheduled to release its quarterly sales figures later this week.

Investor enthusiasm for Ford initially surged in May following a Morgan Stanley report suggesting potential collaborations between Ford's energy storage division and major cloud service providers. However, analysts stress the need for tangible results and confirmed orders to sustain the AI-related narrative. The storage business is not expected to achieve profitability for several years.
