Zhang Yufu, a forest ranger in Xinmin Village, Jiange County, has dedicated the past eight years to protecting 412 ancient cypress trees. Zhang's daily routine involves patrolling more than 10 kilometers along the ancient Shu Road where these venerable trees are located.
The trees in the Cuiyunlang Ancient Cypress Nature Reserve are recognized as the world's oldest and largest group of artificially planted roadside ancient trees. The section under Zhang's care is situated alongside the busy National Highway 108, exposing the cypresses to risks such as traffic accidents, fires, and pests.
Beyond routine inspections, the ranger's duties include preventing littering and advising the increasing number of tourists on safety. Zhang has also compiled a personal archive for each tree, documenting its condition and growth. His diligent efforts have ensured that no damage has occurred to the trees under his supervision.
Zhang began his role as a forest ranger voluntarily in 2018, despite facing financial challenges at home. He remains committed to his work, emphasizing the importance of preserving these trees, left by ancestors, for future generations.
