Former ByteDance Robotics Head Reportedly Joins Xiaomi

Kong Tao, who previously led ByteDance's robotics team, has reportedly joined Xiaomi to head a division focused on developing foundation models for robots. Sources familiar with the matter indicate Kong joined Xiaomi in 2025 and brought several former ByteDance colleagues with him.

Xiaomi's robotics division reportedly employs around 200 people. The foundation model team operates independently within the company's robotics business. Xiaomi has already released its Xiaomi-Robotics-1 foundation model and is currently testing humanoid robots in manufacturing settings.

The move highlights Xiaomi's growing investment in artificial intelligence and robotics, aiming to strengthen its position in a competitive technological landscape. Developing advanced foundation models is crucial for creating more intelligent and autonomous robots for future industrial applications.
