Former Derwen College Student James Celebrates Five Years with Premier Inn
James Lewis, who has Down's syndrome, has completed five years of employment at Premier Inn Wrexham North. He began working at the hotel after completing hospitality training at Derwen College.
James Lewis, an individual with Down's syndrome, has marked five years of employment with Premier Inn. Lewis works twice weekly in the housekeeping department at the Premier Inn Wrexham North hotel, following his hospitality training at the specialist Derwen College in Shropshire.
He has become proficient in hotel routines and brand standards, establishing himself as a valued member of the hotel team. Lewis's employment at the hotel began in 2018, following supported internship and work experience at Premier Inn facilitated by Derwen College.
The 28-year-old's journey from a supported internship to paid employment highlights Premier Inn's commitment to inclusive hiring practices. The company has a long-standing partnership with Derwen College, aiming to increase employment opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities.
According to Abi Baker, Work Experience and Supported Internship Coordinator at Derwen College, 24 former students have secured employment with Premier Inn. Karen Aguilera, Operations Manager at the Wrexham North hotel, noted Lewis's pride in his work and his integration into the team, including social events. Premier Inn operates over 800 hotels across the UK.
