Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek has released a memoir detailing his defense of controversial decisions and his perspective on his ousting from the company.
Bob Chapek, who was ousted as CEO of The Walt Disney Company in November 2022, has published a memoir where he defends his decisions and discusses his contentious departure.
In "Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth," Chapek claims his predecessor, Bob Iger, played an active role in his dismissal. Chapek alleges that Iger, who remained with the company as executive chairman after handing over the CEO role, used his position to undermine him.
Chapek expresses lingering anger over his abrupt removal, stating he did not have the opportunity to complete his initiatives. He asserts that his departure unfairly damaged his reputation and left others questioning his performance.
The former CEO stands by decisions that proved unpopular with Disney fans, such as increasing theme park prices, eliminating free airport shuttles, and replacing the complimentary FastPass system with the paid Lightning Lane service. He frames these actions as necessary steps taken to improve revenue and business performance, despite public backlash.
Additionally, Chapek highlights his role in promoting Josh D'Amaro, currently head of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. He states he consistently advocated for D'Amaro's advancement, describing him as a lesser-known executive before Chapek's personal endorsement.
