Former General Counsel Launches AI Startup for Corporate Legal Teams

Cecilia Ziniti, who previously served as General Counsel at companies including Replit and Amazon, has launched GC AI, a startup focused on developing artificial intelligence tools for corporate legal departments. Ziniti, who has nearly two decades of experience in legal roles but no technical coding background, was inspired to start the company after seeing the potential of generative AI firsthand.

While at Replit, Ziniti gained early access to GPT technology from OpenAI before its public release. This experience led her to identify a gap in the market for AI tools that could meet the precision, sourcing, and tonal requirements of professional legal work, which general-purpose chatbots struggled to fulfill. She began teaching classes on using AI for legal tasks, further solidifying her understanding of these unmet needs.

GC AI aims to provide AI solutions tailored to the specific workflows of in-house legal teams. The company's offerings include an AI assistant for legal departments, a contract analysis tool, and a platform for managing incoming legal requests. Ziniti emphasized that her own background as a "customer" for such tools was crucial in defining the product requirements for GC AI.

Since its incorporation in November 2023, GC AI, based in San Mateo, California, has reported significant growth. The company now serves thousands of businesses, ranging from large enterprises like Lockheed Martin to startups with a single in-house lawyer. Ziniti highlighted that GC AI differentiates itself by focusing exclusively on corporate legal departments, unlike some competitors who initially targeted law firms.

Ziniti believes her extensive legal background is key to building trust with corporate legal departments, a critical factor in adopting new AI technology. Approximately one-third of GC AI's 125 employees are lawyers, underscoring the company's commitment to domain expertise.
