Former Google researcher Yair Alon joins startup Poetiq

Yair Alon, a veteran researcher known for his work on Pixel's Portrait Mode and video generation systems like VideoPoet, has transitioned from Google to Poetiq. After spending a decade within the Google and DeepMind ecosystems, Alon joined the Y Combinator startup to participate in the early-stage development of AI optimization tools.

Poetiq is building a platform capable of self-optimization, aiming to develop AI systems that can iteratively improve their own architecture and performance. Unlike the structured environment at Google, Alon’s role as a founding research scientist involves managing the entire stack—from developing machine learning techniques to building internal experimentation systems from scratch.

With a focus on scaling and algorithmic foundations, Poetiq is currently scaling its headcount. Alon describes the transition as a shift toward greater autonomy and direct ownership of the product lifecycle. The startup continues to refine its meta-optimizer as it seeks to solve the problem of scaling complex AI operations without manual intervention.
