Barret Zoph Returns to Google in Research Leadership Role
Google has announced the return of Barret Zoph, a notable artificial intelligence researcher, to the company as Vice President of Research. Zoph has a history of significant contributions at both Google and OpenAI.
Zoph initially joined Google Brain in 2016 to focus on large language model research. In 2022, he moved to OpenAI, where he was involved in the development of ChatGPT and led teams responsible for post-training and product deployment of foundational models. His career includes collaborations with several key figures in the AI field.
More recently, Zoph co-founded Thinking Machines Lab before rejoining OpenAI. His return to Google is now expected to significantly boost the company's Gemini AI project. "We look forward to welcoming Barret back to Google and to his bringing his expertise in reinforcement learning (RL) and post-training to the Gemini team," stated Google spokesperson Thomas Schoenfelder.
Zoph's transition back to Google marks a significant development in AI research. His extensive experience with large language models and their development lifecycle is seen as a valuable asset for Google's Gemini project, aiming to compete with other leading AI systems.
