Former PlayStation Head: Steam Machine Pricey and Underpowered for Mainstream Gamers
Industry veteran Shūhei Yoshida called Valve's Steam Machine uncompetitively priced and lacking in 3D performance for average consumers, recommending it only for industry research.

Shūhei Yoshida, a highly respected figure in the video game industry and former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Global Studios, has shared his experience and critical assessment of Valve's Steam Machine console.
In comments posted on X, Yoshida highlighted positive aspects such as the console's user-friendly interface and a notable feature allowing direct startup via the Steam controller. However, he also pointed out significant drawbacks, describing the 3D graphics performance as "barely satisfactory." He questioned the default 1080p resolution setting, drawing a parallel to the PlayStation 4 era, and cited "extremely long loading times" for certain games.
The most critical observation from Yoshida concerned the device's pricing. He stated that the price was "not friendly at all" and that it would be "difficult to recommend to ordinary players," unless for the purpose of industry research.
This price criticism is amplified by reports that the Steam Machine will cost over $1000. Furthermore, Valve appears to have retracted earlier claims that the console could deliver 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, raising further questions about its market viability and value proposition for the average consumer.
