Former tech worker launches mobile bookstore in vintage truck
Following a layoff from the tech sector, Andi Bailey has launched Flatbed Fiction, a mobile bookstore housed within a refurbished 1961 Studebaker truck.

After being laid off from her role in the tech industry, Andi Bailey pivoted to entrepreneurship by launching Flatbed Fiction. The business operates out of a 1961 Studebaker Champ, which Bailey acquired through Facebook Marketplace and converted into a mobile retail space.
The conversion process took less than a month and involved installing shelving units into the truck bed to accommodate a curated selection of books. The mobile bookstore concept allows for pop-up operations, with its first public appearance taking place at a coffee shop in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Bailey noted that the layoff provided the impetus to pursue a long-held ambition of bookstore ownership. By utilizing a vintage vehicle, the business model bypasses the overhead costs associated with a brick-and-mortar storefront while maintaining the flexibility to serve various local communities.
