Fortum Aims for Responsible Solar Energy Production
Fortum is developing new large-scale solar power projects in the Nordic region, focusing on sustainability, including promoting biodiversity and responsible supply chains.
Energy company Fortum Oyj has outlined its strategy for enhancing the sustainability of its solar power production in the Nordic countries.
The company is currently developing several industrial-scale solar projects in the region. While solar energy's share of global electricity consumption is projected to grow significantly, its production can have local environmental and social impacts.
Fortum has set a target that its current and new operations will not further reduce terrestrial biodiversity from 2030 onwards. The selection of project sites prioritizes land with low ecological value, such as agricultural fields. Plans include planting meadow vegetation to support pollinators and utilizing sheep for grazing between solar panels.
The company is also measuring the ecological footprint of its solar operations. A case study at the planned Tarvasjoki solar power project in Finland will assess the project's environmental impact and pilot measures for biodiversity protection.
Additionally, Fortum joined the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) in June 2024. This initiative aims to promote responsibility and transparency in solar energy supply chains, covering ethical conduct, human rights, and working conditions.
