Fortum aims to increase wind power production to strengthen Finland's energy self-sufficiency
Fortum Oyj announced in September 2022 its intention to boost domestic wind power production in Finland. The company highlighted the significance of local cooperation for developing new wind farm projects.

Helsinki – Fortum Oyj announced in September 2022 that it aims to increase its production of renewable electricity in Finland, with a focus on wind power. The Ostrobothnia region was identified as a promising area for new wind farm projects due to its favorable wind conditions.
The Kalax wind farm in Närpes, operational since late 2020, produces 300 GWh of renewable electricity annually. A substantial portion, 70%, is sold to Neste under a long-term contract. Additionally, the local Koskenkorva distillery has reduced its electricity consumption by utilizing power from Kalax.
According to a survey commissioned by Fortum, 83% of Närpes residents are in favor of the Kalax wind farm. The company emphasized the importance of successful local stakeholder collaboration, including with landowners, for the project's acceptance and success.
"The role of renewable and domestic wind power generation is crucial for achieving a carbon-neutral energy system," stated Mikko Iso-Tryykäri, Head of Wind Power Development at Fortum. He added that the company hopes Kalax's strong local support will pave the way for future projects in the region.
