Energy company Fortum and data center firm EcoDataCenter have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the data center in Falun, where technology company CoreWeave is establishing advanced computing capacity.
The agreement ensures that the facility will be supplied with fossil-free electricity from Fortum's hydropower plants on the Dalälven river, including local origin guarantees. This collaboration aims to combine sustainable energy supply with large-scale AI development, while strengthening both companies' presence in Dalarna.
Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter, highlighted the collaboration's significance for regional growth. "The agreement with Fortum, which provides power to our Falun facility directly from Dalälven, is a good example of this," Michelson stated. He added that joint planning between data centers and energy companies creates new opportunities for the entire region.
For Fortum, the agreement signifies a confirmation of the growing importance of data centers for Swedish industry and a conscious commitment to the sector. The company sees significant potential in supporting this expanding industry with stable, fossil-free electricity.
The agreement covers 10 MW for the SE3 electricity trading area and runs from 2026 to 2030. It includes origin guarantees from Fortum's hydropower plants on the Dalälven. Fortum will also assume responsibility for the physical electricity delivery and balancing for EcoDataCenter's operations in Falun.
