Fortum and Helen's Pjelax Wind Farm Operational – Third Largest in Finland
The Pjelax wind farm, jointly owned by Fortum and Helen in Närpes and Kristinestad, has been commissioned. The 56-turbine park is Finland's third largest, producing over a terawatt-hour of electricity annually.
The Pjelax wind farm, a joint project between Fortum and Helen comprising 56 wind turbines located in Närpes and Kristinestad, has been officially commissioned. The park, constructed by Suvic and Simons Infra with turbines supplied by Nordex, is now the third largest in Finland.
The Pjelax facility is expected to generate over a terawatt-hour of wind electricity per year, accounting for approximately five percent of Finland's total wind power production. Fortum holds a 60% stake in the project, with Helen owning the remaining 40%. Helen will purchase about half of the electricity produced throughout the park's operational lifespan.
According to Fortum's CEO Markus Rauramo, the 380-megawatt (MW) capacity of Pjelax doubles the wind power capacity operated by the company. He emphasized the role of wind power in the clean energy mix and its contribution to helping customers reduce their emissions.
Construction of the wind farm commenced in January 2022 and was completed on schedule. The project involved significant infrastructure and civil engineering work, with specialized transport for turbine components conducted via the port of Kaskinen, involving a total of 728 specific transports.
