Fortum and KORAD to cooperate on radioactive waste management

Fortum Oyj and the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the field of radioactive waste management. The agreement aims to further foster and formalize collaboration between the parties, establishing a foundation for general information and experience sharing.

Fortum has previously provided consultation support to KORAD on waste management and disposal topics over the past few years through two separate assignments. This collaboration allows KORAD to leverage Fortum's extensive four-decade experience and expertise in nuclear and radioactive waste management, including operational experience with final repositories for nuclear waste.

The MoU is expected to pave the way for more detailed technical support and consultation activities, which can be executed on a commercial basis under separate case-specific agreements. Antti Ketolainen, Director of Decommissioning and Waste at Fortum's Nuclear Services, stated that the agreement represents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with KORAD, identify new service project opportunities, and expand their waste management and final disposal services.

Fortum's Nuclear Services division possesses over 40 years of experience in the design, licensing, and operation of nuclear facilities, covering the entire lifecycle from new builds to decommissioning and final disposal of nuclear waste.
