Fortum and Microsoft partner on data center waste heat recovery system

Fortum and Microsoft have launched a collaborative project to capture and utilize waste heat generated by servers at a new data center region in Finland. The captured thermal energy will be integrated into Fortum’s district heating network, which serves the cities of Espoo, Kauniainen, and Kirkkonummi. The companies estimate the system will meet 40 percent of the district heating demand in the area.

This project represents a collaboration between cloud infrastructure and energy utility management. For Microsoft, the partnership addresses the need for efficient heat disposal while simultaneously supporting the local energy transition. For Fortum, the initiative is a critical component in achieving its stated goal of carbon-neutral district heating by 2030.

Industry observers note that the project aligns with broader trends toward the electrification and decarbonization of municipal heating systems. The integration of data center cooling infrastructure into public utility networks serves as a template for future large-scale developments seeking to balance digital infrastructure requirements with environmental sustainability targets.
