Fortum: Climate Ambition Crucial for EU Competitiveness
Energy company Fortum Oyj emphasizes that ambitious climate goals are essential for the EU's future competitiveness, energy security, and low-carbon industry.

Helsinki – Energy company Fortum Oyj has published an analysis highlighting that the EU's ambitious climate goals are crucial for the continent's competitiveness, energy security, and a low-carbon future. The company argues that climate actions are not only necessary for environmental protection but also lay the foundation for sustainable economic growth and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
According to Fortum, the European Green Deal is an ambitious plan aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. While progress has been made, particularly in electricity generation, the company points out that the EU's current plans are insufficient to meet the emission reduction targets for 2030. Fortum calls for a 'Green Deal 2.0' focused on reducing emissions from industry, transport, and agriculture through innovation.
The company stresses that the transition to clean energy requires a balanced approach that also considers citizens' concerns about the costs of the transition. It believes it is important to clearly communicate the economic and social benefits of the green transition, such as job creation and new business opportunities. Reindustrialization powered by clean and affordable energy is seen as a driver for growth and competitiveness.
Fortum proposes expanding the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to cover all sectors and implementing carbon pricing on an equitable basis. The company also supports promoting global carbon pricing and ensuring a level playing field internationally. According to Fortum, ambitious climate policies are the cornerstone of Europe's future.
