Fortum Conducts Habitat Restoration in Bollnäs
Fortum Oyj has initiated a project in Bollnäs, Sweden, to restore fish migration routes and enhance biodiversity. The project, a continuation of earlier efforts, is expected to be completed in spring 2019.
Fortum Oyj has begun a project in Bollnäs, Sweden, aimed at restoring free fish passage between the Galvån and Klumpströmmen watercourses. The initiative, a continuation of efforts started in 2016 with Bollnäs municipality and the local fishing association, is scheduled for completion in spring 2019.
The project focuses on improving and partially restoring stream habitats in Klumpströmmen, areas previously affected by logging and hydropower development. The restoration work commenced in late November and involves close collaboration with the municipality, the fishing association, and local contractors.
"These measures are a natural continuation of the good cooperation that began years ago with Bollnäs municipality and the fishing association. We want to make a local environmental effort that makes a difference, and we hope this project contributes to that," said Bertil Planeskog, facility manager at Fortum.
The initiative is partly funded by Fortum's environmental fund, "Bra Miljöval," which supports projects promoting biodiversity and sustainable energy production in areas where Fortum operates hydropower facilities. Funds are derived from the sale of electricity certified under "Bra Miljöval" and from the company's own contributions.
