Fortum opens hydrogen pilot facility in Loviisa
Fortum has inaugurated its Kalla Test Center in Loviisa, Finland, a facility dedicated to long-term testing of hydrogen production technologies under real operating conditions. The center aims to support future hydrogen projects and customer needs.
Fortum Oyj has officially inaugurated its Kalla Test Center in Loviisa, Finland, marking a significant step in the company's hydrogen development strategy. The facility will focus on long-term testing and operational learning of hydrogen production technologies under real-world conditions, with the goal of informing future hydrogen projects and addressing customer requirements.
The €20 million investment covers both construction and operational phases of the approximately 2 MW hydrogen plant. Site preparation began in autumn 2024, with construction commencing in summer 2025. The facility produced its first hydrogen in December 2025 and is expected to be fully operational by summer 2026. The Kalla Test Center will function as a learning and development platform through 2028.
Kalla is notable for being one of the first sites in the Nordic region to test two different electrolyser technologies side-by-side within the same facility. This approach allows Fortum to gain practical experience and build technical knowledge to ensure both readiness and commercial viability for hydrogen solutions.
Fortum views hydrogen as a critical enabler for decarbonizing industries and societies, supporting the transition away from fossil fuels. The company collaborates with partners, including electrolyser providers Hystar and Stargate Hydrogen, and local stakeholders in Loviisa to advance these developments.
