Fortum supports Steady Energy's nuclear reactor development with simulation software
Fortum and Steady Energy enter cooperation: Fortum provides its Apros simulation expertise for the development of Steady Energy's small-scale reactor project. The goal is to create a digital twin for the LDR-50 reactor.

Energy company Fortum will support Finnish technology firm Steady Energy in the development of its small-scale nuclear reactor for district heating, the LDR-50. As part of the cooperation, Fortum will provide its Apros simulation software and expertise.
The objective is to create a comprehensive digital twin for the reactor designed by Steady Energy. This model will enable comparative analyses for licensing processes and help resolve technical issues to ensure the reactor's functionality and dimensioning. The Apros software was developed jointly by Fortum and VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland).
According to Fortum, Apros is suitable for simulating nuclear power plants throughout their lifecycle. The company sees the collaboration with Steady Energy as an opportunity to leverage its decades of experience in developing smaller-scale nuclear energy solutions. Steady Energy's CEO Tommi Nyman emphasizes the partnership's significance for advancing Finnish reactor technology.
Fortum's Apros software has been used in over 30 countries and is utilized by a diverse range of entities, including energy companies, engineering firms, and research institutes. The software received the Automation Award from the Finnish Society of Automation in 2021.
