Fortum to Increase Wind Power Production in Finland
Fortum plans to expand wind power projects in Ostrobothnia to enhance Finland's energy self-sufficiency. The Kalax wind farm has been producing renewable electricity in Närpes since 2020.

Fortum Oyj is planning to increase its production of renewable wind power in Finland, with a focus on the Ostrobothnia region due to favorable conditions for wind farm development. The company states that domestic and renewable wind power strengthens Finland's energy self-sufficiency and supports the goals for a carbon-neutral energy system.
The Kalax wind farm in Närpes, the largest in the region, has been operational since late 2020. The facility produces 300,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, with 70% sold directly to Neste under a long-term contract. The local Koskenkorva distillery also utilizes wind power from Kalax.
Mikko Iso-Tryykäri, Head of Wind Power Development at Fortum, emphasizes the importance of local cooperation for the success and acceptance of these projects. He notes that an opinion poll indicates 83% of Närpes residents support the Kalax project, and 75% consider wind power necessary for mitigating climate change.
Fortum aims to continue its positive collaboration with the Närpes region and its residents and stakeholders for future wind farm projects. The company believes the strong support for Kalax will facilitate the implementation of new developments in the area.
