Fortum's Apros tool supported power upgrade at Forsmark nuclear plant

Forsmark Kraftgrupp AB (FKA) in Sweden has employed Fortum's Apros simulation software for compatibility and safety analyses concerning power upgrade projects at its nuclear facilities. Notably, the upgrade of Forsmark Unit 2 from 900 MWe to 1118 MWe between 2009 and 2011 required extensive analysis of system interactions.

Fortum developed an "as-built" model of Forsmark 2 for FKA in 2008, which was subsequently updated to an "uprated" model. These simulations were crucial for verifying that planned modifications to reactor components, process systems, and the control system would function as intended. The software allowed for detailed analysis of how various operational transients would affect the reactor's water-steam cycle and overall safety.

Apros provided the capability to simulate the dynamics of the complete water/steam cycle and automation systems with high accuracy using detailed physical models. This facilitated FKA's understanding of the plant's future behavior and aided in planning commissioning tests for the upgraded unit.

The power upgrade project for Forsmark Unit 2 was successfully implemented, and the reactor has operated at the higher power level since. Fortum reports that the Apros tool has also been applied to other analyses at Forsmark, including spent fuel pool modeling and pressure protection safety assessments.
