Founder Closes Successful AI Startup Despite Early Gains

Jonathan Liem, co-founder of Nex AI, has decided to close the artificial intelligence startup, despite its early success and securing significant enterprise contracts. Liem stated in an interview with Tech in Asia that the shutdown was driven by personal factors, including burnout and a reassessment of his long-term commitment to the sector, rather than business performance.

Nex AI focused on converting unstructured data into structured formats for enterprises, a niche that proved lucrative. The company managed to sign contracts worth seven figures, with its model drawing comparisons to that of tech firm Palantir. However, Liem and his co-founder experienced significant burnout, compounded by the complexities of operating in Asian markets.

Liem described the enterprise data space as "unsexy," involving tedious tasks like data deduplication and long sales cycles. He highlighted that in Asia, business dealings are heavily relationship-based and markets are fragmented, adding layers of difficulty to the sales process.

Following his co-founder's departure, Liem realized he did not envision himself leading such a company for the next decade. He emphasized the importance of personal passion and belief in one's work, beyond financial success. Liem is now pivoting to a new venture, aiming for a different market where he feels a stronger long-term alignment.
