Founder's Relationship Advice: Four Words That Can De-escalate Any Conversation.

Inc. Magazine has published an article detailing communication strategies for business leaders. CEO Dave Kerpen introduces a four-word phrase he calls a "cheat code" for human relationships, particularly within a professional context.

Kerpen argues that many founders and leaders err by prioritizing "winning" arguments. He states that even when correct, making someone else feel wrong often leads to resentment and damage to relationships, potentially costing deals, employees, or personal harmony.

As an alternative, Kerpen proposes "validation," which he clarifies is not the same as agreement or surrender. Validation, in his view, is the act of demonstrating understanding of the other person's perspective before presenting one's own. Examples include phrases like, "That makes sense," "I can see why you'd feel that way," or "You may be right."

The phrase "You may be right" is highlighted as particularly potent. Kerpen emphasizes that this does not equate to admitting fault but rather acknowledges the possibility of the other person's valid viewpoint. This, he suggests, can swiftly shift an adversary into a collaborator without compromising one's own stance.

Kerpen provides practical applications, such as dealing with employees. Instead of immediately re-explaining a decision when an employee pushes back, he advises first validating their concerns. This often leads to employees understanding the leader's position once they feel heard. In other instances, validation can surface overlooked issues, which is a primary function of hiring a team.
