Four AI Companies Sued Over Allegations of Slowing Development
Four consumers have filed an antitrust lawsuit against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI. The complaint alleges the companies colluded to slow the pace of development for their competing AI products.
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against four major artificial intelligence companies – OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Elon Musk's xAI – accusing them of conspiring to slow down AI development and stifle competition.
The lawsuit, filed on September 18 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that the companies coordinated their efforts. The plaintiffs claim this coordination was intended to hinder competition and delay the release of new, more advanced AI models.
The plaintiffs are seeking treble damages and an injunction against the alleged agreement. They also want the court to certify a nationwide consumer class, covering all U.S. consumers who have purchased paid subscriptions to services like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Gemini.
According to the complaint's details, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed in early September a slowdown in frontier AI development and the establishment of safeguards. His proposals included restrictions on computing power used for model training and the use of AI to improve AI itself. The lawsuit states that both OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk publicly endorsed this proposal. OpenAI has since confirmed collaboration with Anthropic and Google, with Altman reportedly stating that AI development should be slower than it otherwise could be.
This alleged collusion among tech giants raises significant questions about competition and the future direction of AI. The legal proceedings could have a substantial impact on the industry's development and regulatory landscape.
