Paul Comfort, a former CEO and contributing writer for Fast Company, has developed a four-question framework to guide individuals in assessing their job satisfaction and identifying roles that not only utilize their skills but also ignite their passion.

Comfort's journey began with a period of professional dissatisfaction. He found himself in a position that did not align with his strengths or offer growth, despite a high salary. These questions are designed to prompt a thorough evaluation of whether a current role meets an individual's professional and personal needs.

Instead of resigning, Comfort chose to redesign his existing role. He volunteered to lead new employee orientations, an activity he enjoyed that involved working with people and understanding the organization's broader objectives. This adjustment transformed his least favorite day into his most anticipated.

The framework suggests that before leaving a job, consider reshaping it. This could involve volunteering for different assignments, seeking new responsibilities, or shadowing colleagues in other departments. Ultimately, Comfort advises identifying the intersection of one's abilities, passions, and organizational needs—his "X-factor"—to find work that truly makes them come alive.
