FOX Sports Designer Uses Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine for Final Project

Jesse Larson, a lead designer at FOX Sports, has successfully completed a 10-week advanced course, utilizing Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine to create a real-time video project named "Mountain Monastery." The project highlights his focus on game engine technology within the broadcast and film industries.
Larson, a longtime Cinema 4D artist, embarked on the course driven by his interest in real-time game animation. He dedicated himself to learning more about tools like ZBrush and enhancing his skills, paralleling industry shifts towards game engine-driven content. Tuition support from FOX Sports facilitated his participation, which Larson noted provided a strong incentive to complete the course work.
In developing "Mountain Monastery," Larson used Cinema 4D for initial blocking and 3D component creation, refining details throughout the process. He emphasized the software's flexibility, allowing him to modify elements and add complexity as needed. The creation of trees proved particularly challenging, but Cinema 4D enabled iterative corrections and adjustments.
During the course, which required 15-20 hours of work per week, Larson employed Cinema 4D's sculpting tools for elements like ivy on the temple walls and MoGraph tools for details such as roof tiles and lanterns. The completed environment was exported from Cinema 4D into Unreal Engine for finalization. Texture work, particularly for rock details, was enhanced using ZBrush and Substance Designer/Painter.
