The governments of France and Germany have awarded an initial framework contract to Dassault Aviation and Airbus, along with partners MTU Aero Engines, Safran, MBDA, and Thales, to launch the demonstrator phase for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). This contract marks a significant step in developing the next generation of European air combat capabilities.
The 18-month contract will focus on developing demonstrators and maturing key technologies. The program aims to commence flight tests by 2026, reinforcing European operational, industrial, and technological sovereignty. This initiative underscores the political will to advance the collaborative defense project.
Dassault Aviation will serve as the prime contractor for the Next Generation Fighter (NGF), the core element of FCAS, with Airbus as the main partner. Other key components include Remote Carriers (RC) and the Combat Cloud (CC), with Airbus leading these efforts, and engine development undertaken by Safran and MTU.
This phase follows the initial Joint Concept Study and will involve the development of a simulation environment to ensure consistency. Future steps include the integration of Spain and the involvement of additional suppliers in Phase 1B, which will follow the successful conclusion of Phase 1A.
