France transitions to "Free Flow" toll system

France is initiating a significant shift in its motorway toll system by gradually introducing the Free Flow model. This new system removes traditional toll plazas and payment booths, replacing them with automatic vehicle identification.

The Free Flow toll system is already operational on specific sections of the A4 (Boulay), A13/A14 (Paris-Caen), and A79 (Montmarault-Digoin) motorways. The A40, A69, and several junctions in the Greater Lyon and Grenoble areas are also slated to adopt the new system between 2025 and 2027. The timeline for the popular A7 and A8 motorways remains unclear.

Under the system, vehicles are identified electronically, with license plates being automatically recorded. Toll payments must be completed within 72 hours of using the designated stretch of motorway. Accepted payment methods include online credit card payments, the ADAC toll box, or cash payments at specific retail points.

It is important to note that failure to pay promptly can result in fines of up to 375 euros. Travelers are also advised to be wary of fraudulent emails and SMS messages that impersonate official toll invoices, often requesting payment via a link. Payments should always be made through official channels only.
