Fraudulent emails concerning 'refunds' distributed

Warning Issued Over Scam Emails:

The ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice has alerted the public to a surge in fraudulent emails targeting individuals with promises of refunds for 'overpaid broadcasting fees'. These messages, often carrying subjects like "Refund Notification", are not genuine communications from the Beitragsservice. Instead, they are identified as phishing attempts designed to distribute malware or steal sensitive banking and credit card information.

Do Not Engage with Suspicious Emails:

Recipients are urged not to click on any links or buttons within these deceptive emails. The current scam variant often advertises a substantial refund, reportedly up to EUR 560, and directs users to follow a verification process that involves clicking a link, potentially to process a refund to a credit card. The Beitragsservice explicitly states that it never conducts refunds via credit card or requests such financial details via email.

Identifying the Scam:

While fraudsters continually adapt their methods, key indicators can help identify these scams. These may include unusual sender email addresses, impersonal greetings like "Dear Customer" instead of a specific name or reference number, and the use of older terminology for broadcasting fees instead of the current 'Rundfunkbeitrag' (journalism contribution), which has been in place since 2013. Some scam emails may also falsely provide official-looking contact details to build trust.

Authorities advise immediate deletion of such emails and strongly advise against clicking any links or providing any personal information. Official communication from the Beitragsservice does not occur through these types of email solicitations.
