Fraudulent emails impersonating ZDF demand broadcast fee payments
Germany's broadcast fee service warns of phishing emails posing as ZDF and demanding payment for the broadcast fee. The service urges recipients not to pay and to verify sender details.
ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice, the German entity responsible for collecting public broadcasting fees, has issued a warning regarding fraudulent email campaigns. These emails falsely claim to originate from ZDF, a major German public broadcaster, and demand payments for the broadcast fee, often citing "digitalization of our processes" or offering discounts.
The service explicitly states that these emails are fake and do not come from either ZDF or Beitragsservice. The bank account details (IBAN) provided in these fraudulent messages are not associated with the official fee collection service. Recipients are strongly advised against making any payments based on these deceptive communications.
While the appearance, format, and requested amounts vary among the fraudulent emails, a common tactic is the demand for payment via email. Indicators of a scam include reference numbers that do not match the recipient's personal fee number and sender details like "ZDF Rechnungswesen" which hide cryptic email addresses unconnected to ZDF or Beitragsservice.
Beitragsservice reiterates that they never request broadcast fee payments via email. It advises individuals to verify the official bank details for Beitragsservice and consider opting for direct debit (Lastschriftverfahren) for secure and convenient payment processing.
