The Fraunhofer Institute's annual assembly took place on June 10, 2026, at the Congress Center Leipzig. The event, themed "Fraunhofer—Transfer for Our Future," focused on how scientific excellence can be more quickly and effectively translated into economic value, technological sovereignty, and societal progress.

In his speech, Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, emphasized the need to translate research findings into marketable applications more rapidly. "If we want to remain competitive and ensure our long-term success as an industrial base, innovation is key," Hanselka stated. He called for a comprehensive approach to improving technology transfer across all channels, from contract research for industry to licensing and spin-offs.

Hanselka reported a record high in industrial revenue for 2025, despite economic challenges, highlighting the impact of applied research. "Fraunhofer research really does make an impact. And it does so where it is needed: in and for industry and society," he said. While acknowledging spin-offs as a fast track for disruptive technologies, he stated that contract research for industry remains Fraunhofer's primary focus, as clients require immediate, competitive solutions.

Oliver Zipse, former CEO of BMW AG, praised applied research as a key driver of innovation and stressed the necessity of collaboration between research, industry, and government for transformation. Zipse also underscored the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's crucial role in securing Germany's innovative strength and long-term economic viability.
