Fraunhofer assists companies with strategic decarbonization roadmaps
Research institutes develop customized decarbonization roadmaps that offer both environmental and economic benefits for businesses.

Fraunhofer institutes in Germany are developing strategic plans to help companies reduce their carbon emissions. New projects aim to create practical, data-driven roadmaps that not only achieve climate goals but also provide economic advantages for businesses.
Fraunhofer IPK, Fraunhofer IPA, and Fraunhofer IST have collaborated to assist an international appliance manufacturer. The company had previously identified and implemented individual emission reduction measures, such as developing more energy-efficient products and using sustainable materials. However, a lack of an overall strategy hindered progress.
The institutes' scientific approach involves analyzing costs and benefits. The goal is to identify measures that most effectively reduce emissions while also generating financial returns. For instance, material savings and the use of lower-emission materials like aluminum and steel were identified as effective solutions.
Additionally, supply chains were examined to optimize logistics, such as replacing air freight with sea transport where feasible without significant delays. The project outcomes and tools are now being shared more broadly for companies to leverage competitive advantages derived from climate-friendly practices.
